PROJECT: MAKING AN ORIGAMI


Laura and her family visits her grandfather's grave at Manzanar War Relocation Camp. There they found origami birds as a symbol of peace.

How to make an origami bird....

 

Use a 8 1/2" X 11" paper and cut into a square shape.

     
  Fold diagonally.
     
 

Fold over the top triangle until the sides form two equal triangles.

     
 

Fold one side of the triangle.

     
 

Fold in half (turn 90 degrees).

Fold the top layer.

Then fold the bottom layer back to align with the top layer.

 

 

     
 

 

Align the wings up with each other.

     
 

 

Fold down the little corner of the head and unfold...Push down to create a beak.

Fold wings to align with the top of the body edge.

 

     
 

The bird is complete.

     

TRIVIA: A paper crane is an ancient origami pattern that symbolizes health and peace. In Japan, CRANES FOR PEACE began as a project to collect paper cranes to be sent to Hiroshima, Japan for the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima in honor of the children.
